Do Something That Means Something

How to make your energy footprint smaller
Our hotel have been Green Globe certified since 2022 for Twenty-Eight. We are doing our absolute best to make your stay and our operations as sustainable as possible. Would you like to contribute to our green operations as well? We will be forever thankful!
We are happy to provide you with some tips on how to reduce your footprint during your stay with us.
1. Taking shorter showers
Reduce the time spent in the shower to conserve water and energy. Did you know that the average shower time in the Netherlands is 7.4 minutes? Try to beat it if you can! ;-)
2. Separate waste
Participate in the hotel's waste separation program to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
- On every floor, there is a garbage room where you can separate glass, paper, and rest.
- In your kitchen, you will find a plastic and rest bin.
- Used Nespresso cups are collected by housekeeping and returned to Nespresso. All cups are fully recycled, and the coffee residue is converted into biofuel and compost.3. Housekeeping / Cleaning
- Conscious housekeeping: Our cleaning frequency has been adjusted since February 2024 to reduce the use of linens, transport, chemicals, and water.
- Short stay (≤8 nights): You can choose whether you want cleaning by simply hanging a “touch-up my room” door hanger.
- Long stay (≥9 nights): Standard cleaning every 3 days, with guest preferences taken into account as much as possible.
4. Turn off lights and electronics
Don’t forget to remove your keycard from the electricity when leaving your room. This turns off lights, TV, and other electronics to save energy. The dishwasher will remain running.
5. Dishwasher
Did you know our dishwasher has an eco-setting? Use this button to be the most energy-efficient hotel guest possible!
6. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
Next to our elevators, a stairway is available. Taking the stairs reduces energy use and has extra health benefits ;-)
7. Don’t adjust the room temperature
Our energy-efficient temperature management system perfectly adjusts the temperature in your room. You can increase or decrease the temperature by 3 degrees celsius. Leaving the settings as they are the most energy-efficient! Keeping the curtains closed also helps maintain a comfortable room temperature.
8. Drink tap water instead of bought plastic bottles
In the Netherlands, tap water is perfectly drinkable and tastes the same as bottled water. Drinking tap water reduces plastic use and waste!
9. Go to the city
- Take the bike or public transport instead of a car or taxi.
- The hotel Twenty-Eight is next to Sloterdijk station. The train and bus will take you to the city center or any other destination.
- Bikes are also available at the reception.
By following these tips, you can make a positive impact on the environment and be an energy-efficient hotel guest. Do you have any feedback for us? We are always open for improvement. Please contact our team at

Sustainability at The July – Twenty Eight
At Hotel The July-Twenty Eight , sustainability is highly valued. Our mission is to decrease our environmental impact as much as we can by implementing all kinds of sustainable practices and procedures within our operations. Our waste and energy generation and our water use is excessively managed and reduced in all possible ways. Next to this, we carefully select our
suppliers and other cooperation of our hotel: we are only collaborating with sustainable partners and have multiple policies on procurement to keep collaborating with only green partners. Besides our impact on the planet, we value the people in and out our organization a lot as well. Our employees are the heart of our organization, supporting and empowering our employees is therefore seen as very important at THE JULY in general. Both personal as well as professional growth is enabled by our inspiring work environment. In this Sustainability Management Plan the sustainability strategies of The July-Twenty Eight and THE JULY are outlined, both on environmental as social aspects. Preserving the planet, and empowering our employees are our main missions. The plan focuses on the following pillars:
- Future Proof-Buildings
- Green Operations
- Sustainable supply chain
- Employee Engagement
1. FUTURE-PROOF BUILDING
Part of sustainability is taking the environment into account in various ways. Not only by decreasing the impact on it, but also by blending in with the environment; using environmental aspects in the building and cooperating with local suppliers.
1.1 Building
Hotel The July-Twenty Eight is built at Stadionplein, near the olympic stadium. When designing the building of our hotel, our designer wanted The July-Twenty Eight to actually blend in in the environment. The Olympic stadium is taken as main inspiration and the original design of Stadionplein as the grand approach to the new stadium is kept. For example by our 16-meter overhang without columns that result in a free space for unimpeded view to and from Stadionplein, and the metropolitan feel that the building provides. Besides the design of the building, other aspects of the building contribute to our sustainability as well. A large part of the energy consumed is generated from the building itself, the building has a sustainable heating and cooling system and our showers and toilets have water saving systems integrated. More about our water, waste and energy management can be found in chapter 2.
1.2 Local suppliers
To encourage local suppliers and decrease environmental impact, we always prefer local suppliers and products in our hotel. Some of our local suppliers and products are:
- Lowlander beer | Our botanical beer brewery. Lowlander Beer is locally produced, and has a positive impact on the environment as well!
- Tony Chocolony | Amsterdam’s favorite chocolates! Tony Chocolony is produced in Amsterdam and also aims for a positive social impact, unlike many other chocolate production companies.
- Or Tea? | Where tea is often imported from all over the world, we collaborate with Or Tea? a sustainable tea company established in Haarlem, nearby our hotel.
- Nespresso | All cups are fully recycled by Nespresso. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable. The coffee residues are converted into biofuel and compost.
- Oscar Circular | Oscar circular is our local waste processing company. Together with the neighborhood we centralize our waste to not have to use giant trucks. More information about this great collaboration can be found in chapter 2.2 waste management. Want to read more about these suppliers and how we choose them. Please also read chapter 3: Sustainable supply chain.
2. GREEN OPERATIONS
The hospitality industry is often accused of affecting the environment in a very negative way. The water use, waste generation, energy generation and many other aspects of hotels all over the world have a big impact on our environment. However, at Hotel The July-Twenty Eight we are unlike others! With our alternative cleaning system, our green partners and our strategies to reduce our water use, waste and energy generation we aim to make our operations as sustainable and environmentally responsible as possible.
2.1 Responsible cleaning
Hotel Room cleanings is an area with much impact on the environment. Wondering how this can have such a big impact? For cleaning a hotel room much water is used. In addition to this, chemicals that are used in cleanings are absolutely not positive as well. For these reasons, at Hotel The July-Twenty Eight we adjusted our cleaning system. Where many hotels provide daily cleanings for all occupied hotel rooms, we have a different cleaning system with a reduced impact on the environment. We distinguish smaller cleanings, bigger cleanings, and just towel changes, so we don’t have to provide a big cleaning (with a high environmental impact) every day. Next to that we don’t clean rooms of our guests who stay 7+ nights every day. Besides, we only use eco-certified cleaning products in all our cleanings. We have adjusted our cleaning system by introducing Touch up doorhangers cleaning which includes straightening up your bed, fresh towels and taking out your trash and restocking your toilet paper. Guests can ask this by placing this by the door on the day itself before 11:00 am. Besides the cleaning itself, linen production and washing uses many chemicals and water as well. Therefore we work together with Blycolin: our linen supplier that guarantees a low environmental impact. No harmful substances are used in the production of the linen, and the washing processes ensure low water consumption and less CO2 emissions.
2.2 Waste management
At Hotel The July-Twenty Eight we are taking various initiatives to reduce our waste as much as possible. To begin with, we are separating our waste over the whole hotel; not only in the F&B outlet, also in our garbage rooms meant for guests multiple garbage bins can be found. In addition to the waste separation, we always try to waste as little as possible. For example by avoiding printing unless strictly necessary and not using disposables. In regards to our waste management, we cooperate with Oscars waste Circular. Oscar is a local waste collective. Oscar tries to involve as many companies in the neighborhood as possible, to centralize the waste processing in the neighborhood. In this way, we don’t let a waste truck come for every company, but gather all waste in one place from where the waste can go to the waste processing center. Oscar is not only centralizing the waste in the neighborhood, the company also ensures all recyclable resources are well-destined.
2.3 Water management
While water might seem so normal in the Netherlands, water is a scarce resource that we need to conserve and handle responsibly. Therefore, Hotel The July-Twenty Eight is putting much effort into saving water, and encouraging our guests to. All our water using products have water- saving features integrated. In this way, our toilets, showers, taps and faucets use less water than normal.
2.4 Energy management
Our building generates a large amount of its energy needed by itself. Namely, our solar panels on the roof of the building provide the hotel with a large amount of energy, enough to keep the hotel foreseen with energy.
3. SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN
While our own operations might be so sustainable, we can only reach a positive environmental and social impact together. That is why we aim to collaborate only with sustainable partners.
3.1 Sustainable Procurement Policy
We encourage and select our suppliers on sustainable practices using a Sustainable procurement policy and declaration. The policy on sustainable procurement includes multiple topics like social equity, fiscal benefits and environmental and health benefits. All to ensure sustainable procurement within THE JULY. In addition to this, we ask our suppliers to sign our sustainable declaration form. This is aimed to only cooperate with suppliers who ensure to use sustainable practices.
3.2 Green partners
- The Good roll | The good roll is 100% tree friendly and sustainable toilet paper. The good roll donates 50% of its profit to the building of toilets in developing countries. The toilet paper consists of 100% recycled paper, without chlorine, dyes or fragrances.
- Printing company de Bij | In 2016 and 2020, Drukkerij de Bij was named one of the greenest printing companies in the world by Kodak. Printing Company De Bij goes for minimal environmental impact in everything they do; in operations and in the printing process. In addition to recycling, the printing company consciously chooses to use renewable energy. The company runs almost entirely on its own solar energy and uses low-energy light sources. Because print shop de Bij uses energy and other resources sparingly, its internal productions are at least C02 neutral. This is possible because the printing company offsets CO2 emissions with Greensand, a natural product that helps to clean up CO2.
- Clini-clowns | We are a public collection point for printer cartridges. Both the cartridges we use as Hotel The July-Twenty Eight and The July and the cartridges used in the neighborhood we collect and these are collected by Clini Clowns. The earnings from these cartridges are for Clini Clowns.
- Marie-Stella-Maris | In our bathrooms, you will not find single-use plastic products (only great care products from Marie-Stella-Maris). For every product you buy, this Amsterdam brand donates a fixed percentage of its turnover to sustainable water projects.
- Tony Chocolony | Tony Chocolony is the first chocolate company who addresses the unfair chocolate chain around the world. They emphasize how billions of people enjoy lovely chocolate at the end of the chain, while cacao farmers live in poverty. Tony Chocolony is 100% slavery free, supports the farmers and follows the path of their chocolate in detail to contribute to a fair chocolate world.
