SUSTAINABILITY AT THE JULY - BOAT & CO

At The July - Boat & Co, we work on improving the sustainability of our hotel operations year on year. Much of this is guided by our annual certification with Green Globe, an independent sustainable tourism certification. Since 2022, we have annually certified our operations with Green Globe, achieving "Gold" status in 2026.

We invite our guests to help us to reduce our water, energy, and carbon footprint. Below are a few simple changes you can make to help us make make a collective impact!

1. Taking shorter showers

Less time in the shower means less water and less energy to heat it. The average shower in the Netherlands is 7.4 minutes.

2. Separate waste

Help us separate our waste, and reduce how much ends in the general waste stream. Here is how you can do it:

• On the 4th floor, next to room #414, there is a garbage room where you can separate glass, paper, and residual waste.

• In your kitchen, you will find bins for plastic and residual waste.

• For coffee cups, these go towards PMD waste.

• Please leave paper and glass on the counter, and we will make sure it ends up in the right recycling bins. If you’d like us to collect it during your stay, just give us a call or visit the garbage room on the 4th floor.

In our restaurant, all food waste goes towards a swill tank in our basement. There, it ferments and is then picked up to be processed into biofuel!

3. Housekeeping Room Cleaning

Since February 2024, we’ve adjusted our cleaning frequency. Skipping the usual daily cleaning schedule means less chemicals, energy, and water needed to clean rooms, replace towels, and fewer linen collection pick ups.

Short stay (less than 8 nights): hang the "Touch up my room" door hanger if you'd like your room cleaned.

Long stay (over 9 nights): We clean every 3 days, with guest preferences taken into account as much as possible.

4. Take your keycard with you and reduce energy usage

Please take out your keycard from the slot when you leave. This turns off lights, TV, and other electronics to save energy, and your dishwasher will still remain running.

5. Eco-setting for the Dishwasher

If you use the dishwasher, consider using the eco•setting to save on energy and water.

6. Take the stairs instead of the lift

Consider taking the stairs next to our lifts next time you head to our leave your room.

7. Leave the temperature as is

Our energy-efficient temperature management system keeps your room comfortable. You can adjust the temperature by up to 3°C, but leaving it as-is is the most energy efficient option. Keeping the curtains closed also helps better maintain the temperature in your room.

8. Drink tap water instead of bottled water

In the Netherlands, tap water is perfectly safe to drink and tastes just as good as bottled water. Use your in-room reusable glass bottle, to reduce single-use plastic.

9. Getting Around Town

Located centrally in the Houthaven neighbourhood, you have easy access to Amsterdam city centre by bus or tram, or to Amsterdam Noord via ferries at the nearby Pontsteiger station. The July - Boat & Co offers bikes to guests, available for booking at reception.

If you do need a taxi, you can ask for an electric option.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE JULY - BOAT & CO

The July - Boat & Co achieved a BREEAM New Construction rating of 'Excellent' in 2020. On the operations side, we achieved a BREEAM In-use rating of "Excellent" (Asset) in 2025, and our hotel operations are certified with Green Globe each year from 2022•2026.

The building sits in Houthaven, an Amsterdam district developed with its own low•carbon heating and cooling network.

Sustainability Highlights at The July - Boat & Co

1. Sustainable heating and cooling

Our building is connected to Houthaven’s innovative thermal energy storage system, providing eco-friendly heating and cooling throughout the year. Did you know? The cooling system draws cold water directly from the IJ river. Cool water from the river is drawn in the winter, and stored underground in Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system. In the wamer summer months, cold water is then pumped up to cool our building and our neighbours.

2. Solar-powered energy

We have 424 solar PV panels on the roof. Last year in 2025, the solar panels generated 117,000kWh, roughly 25% of the building's total annual electricity consumption.

3. Updated cleaning cycles

Since February 2024, we’ve adjusted our housekeeping schedule to reduce our water and chemical consumption, transport, and linen use.

4. Food waste turned into energy

Food waste from our kitchens is collected separately towards a swill tank. Our waste partner, Greenpoint Solutions, collects and processes the swill into biofuels or compost.

5. Space for local wildlife

The July - Boat & Co offers tiny guest rooms too. Our façades include 40+ nesting and living spaces for animals, including bat and bird houses on the roof. On the terrace, you’ll also find insect hotels for bees, butterflies, and caterpillars.

6. Plant-based offerings at Vessel

Our restaurant Vessel offers seasonal menus, and strives to work with local suppliers and seasonal ingredients as much as possible. The menu features shared dishes and delicious vegan options, encouraging more plant•based choices.

7. Outdoor Lighting

We minimise our outdoor lighting at night to reduce our energy consumption, and help you and our neighbours sleep better.

8. Energy Performance

Our building holds an energy label of A (Valid until 20.09.2029), representing strong energy performance, and low energy consumption per meter squared.
